Original Italian Lasagne (意大利千层面)

The classic Italian Lasagna can be prepared without a lot of work. Just prepare two different kind of sauce, a red one and a white one. Then use noodle plates and grated cheese to prepare it layer by layer. The Chinese name for this dish is therefore “Thousand layer noodles”.

Baked lasagna - Bon appetite!

  • 2 tins of peeled tomatos (西红柿)
  • 500g of minced meat (pork or beef) (猪或牛肉糜)
  • 1 big onion (洋葱)
  • 50ml cream (奶油)
  • Pepper, Salt, Thyme, Basil leaves, Sugar (胡椒, 盐, 百里香, 九层塔, 白糖)

Cut onion and briefly fry in hot olive oil. Add peeled tomatos and fry at middle heat for about 3 minutes. Puree so the result is a thick sauce. Add one teaspoon of sugar and 50ml of cream. Use pepper, salt, thyme and basil leaves to flavor. Let the sauce cook for about 30 minutes then to become thick.

P.S.: If you are looking for a great Italian restaurant in Shanghai you might want to check out the “Milano” in Pudong. Altough it is a little far outside the city center and they don’t serve Lasagna, everything else there is really excellent. Try their home-made ice cream for desert!

Your lasagna looks really tasty. I just wonder where do you usually get all the ingredients, like cheese, crushed tomato etc in Shanghai?

Hey MC,

you can get all that stuff either in Jiu Guang Supermarket (the one in Basement floor, 久光百货) on Nanjing Rd. or you can go to any of the Carrefour (家乐福) stores, for example in Gubei or Zhongshan Park.
